You’ve probably done your research for restaurants to eat in, attractions to visit, and stores to shop at, but have you taken notes on your destination’s tipping culture? As visitors, you wouldn’t want to offend locals and seem ungrateful and rude. Be mindful of these gratuity pointers for different kinds of services in the Americas.
5. USA
Hotels: The gratuity for bellmen is $1 to $2 per bag, while it’s $2 to $5 for hotel maids. For the latter, don’t forget to leave your tip with a note labelled as “housekeeping” to assure that it will go directly to them.
Restaurants: Leaving a tip of 15 percent is polite and will be appreciated by servers. However, failure to do so might raise some questions.
Taxis: Tipping taxis should be around 15% of your total fare, but leave a bit more for commendable service.
4. Canada
Hotels: Thank bellhops with a tip of $1-2 per bag and housekeepers for $2-5.
Restaurants: Gratuity is not included in the bill, so tipping between 15-20% is appreciated by servers.
Taxis: Gratuity for cab drivers is also 10-15% of the fare.
3. Mexico
Hotels: Leave bellboys a propina of 10-20 pesos per bag and 20-50 pesos per night for the cleaning staff.
Restaurants: Tip between 10 to 15 percent of your bill, and make sure it’s in the local currency and in cash.
Taxis: Tipping taxi drivers is not required but feel free to round up your total fare if he offers to carry your bags.
2. Brazil
Hotels: Porters get $2 per bag and the same amount for housekeeping staff per day.
Restaurants: Tipping is not necessary when dining as a 10-percent service fee is already included in your bill.
Taxis: Round up your bill as gratuity for the driver.
1. Cuba
Hotels: Show gratitude to bellhops by tipping them 1 CUC per bag and cleaning ladies 1 CUC per day.
Restaurants: Tip between 10 to 15 percent of your bill for waiters, but do leave more if you found the service to be excellent.
Taxis: A 1-3 CUC tip is appreciated by cab drivers.
