At the National Museum of Natural History in Ermita, Manila, the prehistoric remains were on view and their origin story and remarkableness revealed. At the request of National Geographic, FOX Networks Group and The Girl on TV got the inside scoop. Here’s what we dug up:

 

What was found?

Stone tools used for cutting were found next to the bones and teeth of a prehistoric species of rhinoceros. There were cut marks on the bones, implying that it had been butchered. Archeologists dated the finds as far as 709,000 years back.

What does it mean?

This implies that an unknown species related to present day humans used tools to butcher a much larger animal. Researchers do not know which species of early human it could have been as human-like remains have yet to be found.

Previously, it was believed that early humans arrived in the Philippines 67,000 years ago. But with this recent discovery, this places the arrival of humans on our soil much further back. Also, it raises the question: were early humans intelligent enough to build watercraft and venture out into the vast, open waters?

 

Why is it important to our nation and to us as humans?

This find is significant because it furthers archaeological and scientific advancement on a global scale. Not only is this information valuable to us as a nation in terms of scientific progress and national identity; this research is something that can be appropriated and further developed overseas.

Like the team of researchers who found the remains, we too, as a country, should be excited to be contributing to something that could affect so many!

And although we aren’t the same species as that which made use of the stone tools, we share the same heritage as they do. Knowing this, it’s up to us take pride in our legacy as human beings; where we came from and how far we’ve come since 709,000 years ago, when we may have first turned up on these shores.

 

What now?

Further work on the archeological site in Kalinga will happen in June. The site where the remains were found only spanned 16 square meters whilst the entire area consists of 16 square kilometers. Could more finds come out of this next stage of the dig?

Meanwhile, you can visit the National Museum of Natural History when it opens its doors to the public on May 18, on International Museum Day. Soak in its gorgeous architecture whilst absorbing its unique flora and fauna exhibits.

“Why is your English good?”

Because after hundreds of years of being colonized by different countries, we have incorporated different languages into our own. Sometimes we don’t even realize that we’re using some Spanish words everyday. Also, because we’re taught well in school and English is our second language.

 

“Why do you have so many family members?”

This is beyond our control. Filipinos are very family-oriented that’s why our reunions and Christmas parties are so lit. Even our cousins 4th times removed are invited to our gatherings. It’s not our fault that we embody the concept of “the more the merrier”.

 

“Why do you like karaoke so much?”

We’re a nation that loves to sing. And we’re pretty darn good at it, too. Rewatch all the singing competition shows you know and you’ll likely find a Pinoy contestant. A Filipino party will not be complete without karaoke. If the neighbors aren’t complaining, you’re not doing it right.

 

“All Filipinas want to marry a foreigner so they can live abroad”

First of all, no. Maybe some of us do, but a lot of us are contented with our own moreno and maginoo boys, thank you very much. Plus, foreign men just won’t get local jokes like Pinoy guys do.

 

“Why do you eat all that bizarre food?”

Dog pulutans are an isolated case in very remote provinces. Cat siopao is just an urban legend. A lot of us have never eaten dog or cat and we abhor the idea. Though there’s nothing wrong with liking balut or tamiluk, isaw, or papaitan. Every country has their own unique delicacies; let us enjoy our own.

Su principal característica es la aleta caudal, una cola que abarca hasta un 50% de los 4 metros a los que puede llegar esta especie de #tiburón zorro, a veces es tan larga como la longitud total de su cuerpo. La usa para golpear a sus presas, su forma de cazar está definida por su cuerpo. Tiene una boca demasiado pequeña como para poder atrapar la captura mientras nada y se alimenta de peces pequeños (sardinas, arenques..) que aturde con un latigazo de esta aleta caudal que alcanza velocidades de hasta 50 kilómetros por hora. Un espectáculo bastante complicado de disfrutar ya que como buen #pelágico vive la mayor parte del tiempo a profundidades de entre 300 y 500 metros. Another indicator that your area is the best is if there’s a good amount of COCOL places to hang out in. In the North corner, Katipunan has Common Folk, an Instagram-worthy spot for coffee lovers and for those who have no bad days. Honorable mentions: Coffee & Protein and Whitewall Coffee

 

We can’t leave out Commune when it comes to cafes in Makati. There is an abundance of coffee spots in the South but among the most talked and posted about is Commune in the famed area of Poblacion. Their Thai fried chicken bowl is a must-try too! Honorable mentions: Zoo Coffee, Exchange Alley

 

BEST FOOD PARK: The Yard (now closed) vs Container Turf

Lots of food parks have popped up since it became a thing but we just can’t get enough of food and more types of food. The North has a bunch of them but Xavierville’s The Yard was a strong contender. From churros, seafood, to Korean BBQ – this place has a lot to offer. Honorable mentions: North Hive and El Neo Garahe

The food park scene in the South has its own flair. Container Turf in BF Homes is one of the if not the best go-to places for the southern foodies. The food offerings put unique twists to traditional food. Honorable mentions: Buendia Food by the Court and The Shipyard Malate

Contrary to popular belief, the north isn’t a remote, desolate place. It has leisure destinations like UP Town Center or Technohub and the malls are always filled to the brim with people. There is no shortage of shopping, dining, and grocery spots. Honorable mentions: Fairview Terraces and  Eastwood City

 

ATC still remains an iconic place to be in the south even until now. It’s still the go-to place for concerts, events, shopping sales, and leisure for southern locals. Honorable mentions: Century Mall and Powerplant

Animals deserve to be protected too. They play a big part in nature as well, so their welfare is our responsibility. At PAWS, you can assist in vet clinics and shelters, as well as participate in awareness campaigns by helping distribute pamphlets and brochures in barangays and neighborhoods.

6. OCEANA

OCEANA has protected more than 3.5 million square miles of ocean and marine life but there’s still a lot to be done. You can support them through donations by signing up on their website and joining more than 500,000 members all over the globe.

5. Waves for Water

This organization helps provide clean water to communities. You can get involved though joining their Courier Program, where you travel and distribute filters to poor or rural communities. You can also join or create a fundraiser to help raise money and promote the organization’s campaign for clean water.

4. World Wide Fund for Nature

WWF’s mission is to help Filipinos create solutions to climate change, provide sustainable livelihood programs, as well as promote the conservation of land and marine life. You can take action by joining them in their social mobilization for the annual Earth Hour or becoming a volunteer photographer and videographer for their communications department.

3. Save Philippines Seas

If you’re a researcher, writer, blogger, or graphic designer, you can become a seatizen. Through these skills, you can take part in the campaigns. They also have a leadership program for youths where you will participate in workshops, outdoor activities, and pitch a project for implementation.

 

2. Haribon Foundation

Save our forests, plant a tree! There are plenty of ways to support and volunteer at Haribon. Aside from tree planting, you can adopt seedlings, assist in research, provide exhibits, and create learning sessions. You can also support them by buying products from their Eco-shop here.

 

1.Greenpeace Philippines

Greenpeace is all about confronting environmental abuse and providing solutions to save our planet from climate change destruction. At Greenpeace, you can help through online activism, attending jungle survival training, researching, or by simply making a donation monthly.
