Dubbed as the surfing capital of northern Philippines, La Union is the nearest spot from Metro Manila where you can hit the waves and clear your mind for the weekend. But on days when the waves get too rough (or too gentle) to ride, worry not. We’ve made a list of other fun things you can do in La Union, sans surfboard.
5. Chill at El Union Coffee
Home of Sly Samonte, two-time Philippine barista champion, El Union is a surfing-inspired cafe that’s been all over our Instagram feeds lately. Aside from serving quality flat whites and cold brews, they also have special drinks on their menu, like their signature dirty horchata. And if you’re a huge fan bacon and cheese, you have to try their grilled cheese sandwich.
Address: MacArthur National Highway, Barangay Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union
4. Trek to Tangadan Falls
Up for an adventure? Trek your way to the majestic Tangadan Falls, a hidden gem located just 20 minutes away from San Juan. If you’re an adrenaline junkie you can even go cliff diving here, but make sure to ask your tour guide first if the water conditions permit.
3. Go on a historical trip and visit the Pindangan ruins.
History enthusiasts will enjoy exploring the ruins of this old church built in 1786.
Address: 12500 MacArthur Highway, Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union
2. Go on a food trip
La Union houses many hole-in-the-wall restaurants, one of which is Olas Banditos, a cozy Mexican joint with killer burritos.
